In a dramatic turn of events, popular activist VeryDarkMan has raised the alarm over an alleged theft of ₦180 million from the account of his NGO. The funds, which included a ₦100 million donation from renowned music producer Don Jazzy, were reportedly siphoned off through a hacking operation.
The incident comes just months after Don Jazzy’s generous donation to support VeryDarkMan’s mission of improving education in public schools. The donation brought the organization’s total funds to ₦170 million, promising a significant boost to its initiatives. However, the activist revealed that hackers had breached the NGO’s systems, draining ₦180 million from the account.
Law enforcement authorities have since apprehended one suspect linked to the cyberattack. In response to the theft, the bank handling the NGO’s account placed it on Post No Debit (PND) status to prevent further unauthorized withdrawals.
The news has sparked intense debate among Nigerians. While some have expressed solidarity with VeryDarkMan, acknowledging the risks NGOs face in handling large-scale donations, others have voiced doubts about the explanation provided.
Critics have questioned how a website hack could directly compromise a bank account, with some calling for greater transparency and accountability from the activist. The controversy has also highlighted the broader issue of cybersecurity vulnerabilities within nonprofit organizations.
Addressing the public, VeryDarkMan reassured supporters that investigations were ongoing and efforts to recover the stolen funds were underway. He emphasized the need for patience as law enforcement and financial institutions worked to resolve the matter.
“This is a wake-up call for all NGOs to strengthen their financial security measures,” he stated. “We are committed to ensuring that this setback does not derail our mission to improve education in Nigeria.”
